Chorus: Gimme' that old time religion,
Gimme' that old time religion,
Gimmie' that old time religion, (Lord)
It's good enough for me.
It was good for our mothers,
It was good for our mothers,
It was good for our mothers, (Lord)
It's good enough for me.
It has saved our fathers, (3x)
It is good for the mourner, (3x)
It brought me out of bondage, (3x)
Makes me love everybody, (3x)
It was good for Paul and Silas, (3x)
It was tried in a fiery furnace, (3x)
It can save all our children, (3x)
It will save a poor lost sinner, (3x)
It will take us home to heaven, (3x)
Compiled through searching multiple hymnals and folk books, one hymnal “Charlie Tillman’s The Revival (1891)” has nine verses listed (I own “Select Church Songs” 1965 by Stamps Baxer Music who pulled directly from this book) will be used as the base of this version.
The earliest print I could find was of The Jubilee Singers which consisted of only four verses, but they pulled from commonly sung songs of the “negro” some of which were slave songs, but I digress.
Being a folk spiritual there is no correct or full version to lay out, so I will be putting extra verses here that can be swapped out or added to those listed as you see fit.
Chorus: Tis’ the old time religion,
Tis the old time religion,
Tis the old time religion,
And it’s good enough for me.
Chorus(Jubilee): Oh! This old time religion,
This old time religion,
This old time religion,
It is good enough for me.
It was good for our – Mothers/Fathers/Sisters/Brothers.
It will do when we are dying
It will lighten every burden
It will make me leave off drinking
It will sanctify me wholly
It will do when the world’s on fire
It is good when you are in trouble
It will carry you home to heaven
It will take me home to heaven,
It is good when you are in trouble
It was good for the prophet Daniel
It was good for the Hebrew children
